"The year's most satisfying adult pop album.. a vocal tour de force that
extend the repertory of popular standards into the rock and soul era.
Ms. Streisand's "Movie Album" is far and away her most satisfying
recording since "The Broadway Album" ...a well-chosen collection of
Hollywood chestnuts that include the gospel ballad "Calling You," from
"Bagdad Cafe"... three definitive interpretations: "Wild Is the Wind,"
"How Do You Keep The Music Playing?" and a swooning bossa nova version
of "I'm In The Mood For Love." The pure, restrained singing on "The
Movie Album" is, in a word, beautiful."
-Stephen Holden, The New York Times
"This wonderful disc features a dozen new recordings of standards that
Streisand covered and produced. Backed by a 75-piece orchestra, she
effortlessly does her renditions of favorite movie songs from 1935
through 1988. Most impressive is her ability to give familiar, classic
tunes such as "Moon River" a fresh sparkle while staying within the
bounds of the original genre, a mark of musical genius. The legendary
singer's gorgeous voice is as unwavering and uncompromising as ever,
making this a can't-miss for Streisand fans and film buffs alike."
-Tom Henry, The Toledo Blade
"On her 60th album, Barbra Streisand returns to what she does best - -
powerful ballads, sung in a voice beyond compare. All songs were
sourced from films, beginning with "Smile" from Charlie Chaplin's
"Modern Times" a sad, melancholy ballad about smiling through
adversity. "Moon River," another gem from "Breakfast at Tiffany's" is
a song Streisand was born to sing. My favorite is "You're Gonna Hear
From Me" the closer, a Broadway belter in the style of Streisand's own
"Don't Rain on My Parade." All in all it's a Barbra feast - - In the
words of our Funny Girl: "Hello gorgeous!"
Sacramento News & Review
"Streisand's voice is still pure, powerful and note-perfect... She moves
through three classics -- "Smile", 'Moon River" and "I'm in the Mood For
Love" -- sometimes adding a hint of vibrato for shimmering effect. The
album's best song, "The Second Time Around," has lush, full
accompaniment, pushing Streisand to give her own best performance."
-Ed Symkus, Boston Herald
"a delight to listen to... Streisand performs in her usual grandeur,
reminiscent of her Broadway albums. She does a lovely "Moon River" and
a defiant "You're Gonna Hear From Me." "I'm In The Mood For Love"
emerges as a breezy bossa nova. The Movie Album is soft and
reflective. Streisand chose these songs very carefully, and each one is
heartfelt to her."
-A.M. Griffith, The Virginian Pilot
"It's not very often in this life that you hear the truth. Yet, when you do,
you can only sit back and marvel at it's power and wonder.
Listening to The Movie Album is listening to the truth.
The true convictions of an artist and peerless professional at the top of their game.
Streisand has many times captured the truth while pursuing her art. That she
still continues to explore its (and her) outer limits, when any other artist
would be content to rest on their laurels, is astonishing...as is The Movie
Album.
It is a welcome balm in this troubled time."
-Steven Froias

"The Movie Album is like a big piece of strawberry shortcake - you just wanna dig in."
-Carson Kressley, US Weekly
"Streisand is back making beautiful music ...singing timeless numbers
with depth - backed by a full band and a 75-piece orchestra, Streisand
utilizes her amazing voice to its full potential - soaring, falling,
always wrapping itself around the lush arrangements. She opens with
"Smile", and then adds her own vocal interpretation on "Moon River."
"Calling You" puts her skills as an actress to work with its haunting
lyrics and melody. She closes the CD with the delightful "You're Gonna
Hear From Me." It's a great number, and Streisand delivers it as if she
were 21 years old again. What listeners of The Movie Album will
remember is its beautiful music, and the incredibly talented woman who
sings with such style and emotion."
-Susan Lotempio, BUFFALO NEWS
"This multi-talented individual's new album has twelve new recordings
that include "Moon River," "Smile," "I'm In the Mood for Love," "Emily,"
and "The Second Time Around." Recorded with a 75-piece orchestra, the
album is melodic and just wonderful listening.ÊThe CD is a welcome
breath of fresh air."
-Andrew Johnson, Blackcat.com
"...this new CD [are] melodies and lyrics, unfettered by gratuitous vocal
gymnastics.. Streisand could sing in her sleep the kind of lush,
romantic film ballads that dominate this collection. But whether
interpreting a standard such as "Smile" or "Moon River" or unearthing a
lesser-known tune, she invests each word and note with respect,
conviction and the buttery warmth that is her trademark."
-Elysa Gardner, USA TODAY
"Streisand gives her signature belting, resonating vocalization to...The
Movie Album tracks... Not many singers can stretch the word "but" to
three syllables, as she does in "I'm in the Mood for Love." Then again,
not many singers have a voice like Barbra Streisand."
-Evan Henerson, Los Angeles Daily News
"Streisand's pipes are in blockbuster shape as she puts 'em behind
standards line "Moon River," "Smile," "I'm in the Mood for Love" and
...gems like "Calling You (from Bagdad Cafe.) Streisand fans will flip
over this stuff. They'll also especially dig the liner notes, which
give a glimpse into Streisand's love affair with film and contain a
personal explanation behind each cover."
-E! On-Line
"Streisand has proven once again that she is the true "Diva" and this
collection will certainly become a must-have for her fans."
-Syracuse Post Standard
"Barbra Streisand stands alone. No other voice can rise and rise like
hers, shimmering upwards, octave after octave, before slinking
raunchily, throatily, back down. It is gorgeous."
-Nigel Farndale, The Sunday Telegraph Magazine, LONDON
"Barbra Streisand has been building toward this collection of songs from
the movies since 1986. Happily, Streisand's voice, recorded before a
large orchestra, remains a marvel. Sure of tone, melodious and
effortlessly agile, even after 40 years and some 60 albums, Streisand
remains pop's most precise singer... the gorgeous "Calling You," a jazzy
bossa-nova take on "I'm in the Mood for Love" and the theatrical belter,
"You're Gonna Hear From Me" ... the quality of that exquisite voice, The
Movie Album deserves a big box-office reception."
-San Jose Mercury News
"Barbra Streisand's The Movie Album In which a dozen film themes are
treated to lushly orchestrated end-credits renditions from the woman who
gave us "Evergreen" and "The Way We Were." Babs is in exquisite vocal
form."
-Ben Wener, The Orange County Register
"The eighth natural wonder of the world, otherwise known as Barbra
Streisand, has spent the past four decades giving the world -- countless
hours of enchantment and entertainment. For millions of us, she is an
indispensable part of our lives and our consciousness. Her new, 60th CD
The Movie Album is the latest showcase for her peerless voice and
artistry. More important, though, is the fact that this album -- like
its predecessors -- has a concept and theme with which its listeners can
readily identify. On The Movie Album Barbra has chosen movie theme
songs which over the years have spoken to or touched her in some way.
These songs, like so many she's recorded over the years, move us because
they've moved her. And her affection for them transmits itself to
us."
-Andy Powell, Metroline
"Heartbreaking one minute, hope-giving the nextÑjust like a great
affairÑBarbra StreisandÕs exquisite mediation on love's variables is
both a career culmination and a new beginning. Forty years in, she still
thrills the soul."
-Chuck Wilson, Flickers
When Barbra Streisand has a new album, it's not just a release, it's an
event. "The Movie Album," a collection of songs spanning most of the
twentieth century, is her latest, greatest labor of love, and you can
hear it in every single song, in every single note. In a word,
astonishing."
-Steven Housman, Genre Magazine
"LIKE a big stick of buttah in a satin bed on a cloud. And I do mean
Barbra Joan Streisand's coming CD, "The Movie Album. Barbra's voice, as
liquid as ever, literally floats above the orchestrations. The disc is,
well...perfect. This is the reason Barbra exists, to deliver such
perfection. Barbra achieved iconic status from the moment her first
album was released, before she conquered Broadway and then Hollywood.
That voice altered popular music. It's been 40 years of triumph... when
she sings, she soars. Still."
-Liz Smith, The NY Post
"This labor of love's going to be big. We've heard The Movie Album and
Streisand, still pop's most precise singer, sounds exquisite."
-Howard Cohen, The Miami Herald
Barbra Streisand, The Movie Album, (Columbia). 4 stars.
For her 60th album, Barbra Streisand has come up with something special,
wrapping her seemingly ageless voice around a dozen of her favorite songs from
films through the years.
Streisand and movie music prove to be a perfect combination. The singer
embraces selections dating back to the 1935 standard "I'm in the Mood For Love"
while extending as far forward as "Calling You," from the 1988 movie "Bagdad
Café."
Through it all, she's at ease, in command and consistently on target.
Working with several different arrangers and a 75-piece orchestra, Streisand adds
richness and grace to the blend of classics and less familiar fare.
She was a teenager when she first sang "Moon River" in 1961, but the song
truly comes alive with the clarity and the maturity that she brings to it now.
The same can be said for her dynamic version of "More in Love With You," from
the 1962 film "The 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse" and her exquisite rendition of
"The Second Time Around," (from 1960's "High Time") which also features some
sparkling sax and piano work.
The set's standout though is "Emily," from the 1964 movie "The Americanization of Emily."
Working with renowned composer/arranger Johnny Mandel, Streisand
makes full use of her expansive range, softly spinning the song's original
lyrics so they're better suited for a woman to sing. With lyrical help from Alan
and Marilyn Bergman, who penned a new two-line introduction for the song,
Streisand turns "Emily" into her own.
The Movie Album which will be in stores on Oct. 14, includes extensive
song-by-song notes written by Streisand. There will also be a limited, collector's
edition of the disc available with a bonus DVD. It's one of Streisand's best
albums in years and sounds like a sure-fire hit for the gift-giving season.
-Kevin O'Hare, Newhouse News Service
"Gorgeous...the premier female singer of the modern era"
-Melinda Newman, Billboard
"This collection of pop songs culled from 60+ years of Hollywood history displays
a love and understanding of movie songcraft whose depth is surprising, even coming
from the legendary diva."
-Amazon.com
"On her 50th? 60th? (who's counting anyway) album of her long
illustrious career, Barbra Streisand proves she'll still got more
lungpower and pure vocal charisma to outshine any of the newer girls on
the block. The Movie Album has been over a decade in its conception
(Barbra mentioned it years ago when she reinvented Garland's "Over The
Rainbow" in her 1987 One Voice concert and boy is it worth it. If you
were expecting an album of tried and tired cinema tunes, think again.
Barbra's always impeccable taste has sought out half-forgotten gems from
60's films (the beautiful "Emily") and unearthed new lyrics for
overlooked melodies (the wonderful "Goodbye For Now" from Reds.) Her
second attempt at "Moon River" - the first was over 30 years back - is
pure class and "You're Gonna Hear From Me" reveals an untapped chutzpah
barely heard since Funny Lady. A labour of love, and it shows.
-ATTITUDE Magazine, London, England
"With her trademark soaring vocals and incredible emotion and energy, Streisand
has once again shown why she is the greatest musical diva of our time...Simply
sublime - a must have!"
-Robert Diamond, BroadwayWorld.com
"...immaculately produced and sung by Streisand, who, on her 60th album,
has never sounded better. She brings the appropriate sense of desolation
to Bagdad Cafe's haunting "Calling You," while turning on the showbiz
flair on the Broadway-style belter "You're Gonna Hear from Me" (from
1965's Inside Daisy Clover.) Streisand fans will eat this up like a
bucket of popcorn."
-PEOPLE MAGAZINE
As Barbra Streisand gently glides through the initial lyric of "Smile,"
..the earnest passion that underlines her performance becomes infectious.
It's a masterful opening to a recording that firmly re-asserts Streisand as
a peerless performer. She challengers herself further by wrapping songs
like "Moon River" (from "Breakfast At Tiffany's",) "But Beautiful" ("Road
To Rio") and "Calling You" (Bagdad Cafe") with faithful, often orchestral
arrangements. When she does unearth a rarity, its connected to a musical
legend, Stephen Sondheim's little-heard, but beloved "Goodbye For Now"
from 'Reds." Her voice remains an incomparable musical instrument.. The
Movie Album also provides a healthy dose of the delicious melodrama
flair...She injects "The Second Time Around," "High Time" with
delightful, larger-than-life-bravado."
-THE ADVOCATE
"The Movie Album touches on incontestable gems that stretch back to the
1930's ("I'm In The Mood For Love," "Smile",) the 1950's and 60's ('Wild Is
The Wind," "Emily," "Moon River",) and beyond (How Do You Keep The Music
Playing," "Calling You" from Bagdad Cafe.) Streisand, who with her
incomparable vocal talents..simply goes to town..skillfully focusing
attention on both the quality of the songs and her own still-lustrous
pipes. This jewel of an album deserves pride of place alongside
Streisand's Broadway tributes--themselves highpoints in her still vital
career."
-William Pearl, Barnes & Noble.com
"Barbra Streisand has a hell of a voice - just like buttuh. Streisand's
smooth croon creates musical evenness that allows "I'm In The Mood For
Love," from the 1935 film "Every Night At Eight," to seem as contemporary
as "Calling You" from 1988's "Bagdad Cafe." Along with "I'm In The Mood
For Love" (rendered nicely with a bossa nova beat), the highlight tracks
are the burning torch song "The Second Time Around" and "Moon River."
-Dan Aquilante, NEW YORK POST, (three stars)
"For her 60th album, in a career that spans five decades, the
multi-million selling Ms. Streisand is backed by a 75 piece orchestra.
Simply put, it is a postcard perfect match. Of course, the material is
well-suited to such treatment. Throughout this lush collection, Streisand
reveals a range of emotions. Especially heartfelt are her takes on "But
Beautiful" (from "Road To Rio) and "Calling You" (from Bagdad Cafe");
With The Movie Album, Streisand remains in a league of her own.
-Michael Paoletta, Billboard
"On The Movie Album, a collection of film tunes ...that spans 53 years,
from 1935 to 1988... she chose material that covers a wide spectrum of
human emotions -- love, longing, loneliness, elation, defiance and
resignation. Most important, she interprets each lyric as if it were
written specifically to soothe her soul. Ms. Streisand's pipes are in
exquisite shape. Her command of melody, her ability to belt like a
showstopper and then croon harmoniously showcase amazing control. On a
samba-lite version of "I'm In the Mood for Love," from 1935's Every
Night at Eight, Ms. Streisand merges a romantic tone with a sultry
mood. During "Emily" (1964's The Americanization of Emily), there's
passion and elegance in her delivery. "Moon River" (1961's Breakfast at
Tiffany's) and "How Do You Keep the Music Playing?" (1982's Best
Friends) both benefit from melancholy yet resilient vocal performances.
That orchestra beautifully supports Ms. Streisand note for note; it
accents her every word. The pairing becomes particularly essential on
"Calling You" (1988's Bagdad CafŽ) and "You're Gonna Hear From Me"
(1965's Inside Daisy Clover). For the former number, singer and players
convey the haunting allure of the song. On the latter, which closes the
album, they combine crescendos and flourishes to express chest-pounding
pride... you feel the care and warmth at the heart of this collaboration
between the star and symphony. They make a great team."
-Mario Tarrdell, THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS (A-)
"For her 60th Album, ...the disc becomes a celebration of everything
Streisand music has always been: big, broad and delectable. The
poignant "Smile," the winsome 'Moon River" is pure buttah in her hands.
And among the album's most beautiful ballads in "Emily." Streisand
delivers a playful bossa nova turn on "I'm In The Mood For Love,"
completely redefining the song's essence. There's the dynamic "Goodbye
For Now" complete with powerful (and previously unknown) lyrics from
Stephen Sondheim. A refreshing change of pace from the same old
compositions that generally creep up on movie music albums."
-Miriam Di Nunzio, CHICAGO SUN-TIMES

"Streisand even makes "I'm In The Mood For Love" sound brand new. Each
of these great Hollywood standards are reborn with Streisand's flawless
interpretation, and effortless style."
-Bill Wightman, WXKS
"In the 1950's this album would have been considered "mood music" because
it puts the listener in a "late night" relaxing mood...just nice and
mellow. In the 1960's the album might have been classified as
"beautiful music" because the lush string arrangements give a soothing
feeling. Barbra's voice blends nicely and reinforces the feeling
created by the mood and concept. The listener has a nice variety of
music. My personal favorites are "Moon River" and "Smile.""
-Bud Buschardt, ABC Radio Networks
"Superb, flowing arrangements combine with vocal stylings from of one of

and the song selections are out of this world. Just to hear Barbra
singing "I'm In The Mood For Love," "Moon River," "Smile," "Emily," "But
Beautiful," and "The Second Time Around" is a long-awaited treat. ...
Barbra Streisand just sings better and better as time goes by...
Incidentally, I was pleasantly surprised and delighted to find "Wild Is
The Wind," "How Do You Keep The Music Playing?" and "You're Gonna Hear From
Me" included on the album."
-Chuck Southcott, Music Of Your Life Radio Network

"What a wonderful, unexpected collection of songs...and what beautiful
renditions. Any album that opens with Charlie Chaplin's "Smile" has got
me hooked."
-Leonard Maltin
"There are many singers who sing and actors who act - and there are a few
gifted artists who sing and act. And then there is one who can do both
at the same electrifying moment with pluperfect pitch as a singer and
actor. Her name, of course, is Barbra - and "The Movie Album" reaffirms
her unique place in American music."

"If Emily says "Heaven is when I am in your arms, like this" I say,
heaven is listening to Barbra Streisand! in English, French, Italian,
Spanish, German, Latin or Hebrow! I love each and every song of your
Movie Album...
Your album songs have opened "doors" to fascinating stories of movies
that either i saw a long time ago and forgot. Or movies that I had never
seen so far since I was born and grew up in South America.
I rediscover a new meaning in each and every one of them!"
Brava, Barbra, brava!!!!!!

"Yet again Ms. Streisand takes us on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Her
voice lifts you up and just as gently takes us to a place of warmth and
security. She reaches inside with her vocal range which if anything is
better than ever. I look forward to many more albums to come."
-Thomas Thomson

"The Movie Album is astounding. As to be expected, Barbra has put out
another stellar collection of songs that stand the test of time. The
arrangments, the sequencing, everything is impeccable and of course the
vocals! That voice that has been inspiring generations for the past four
decades still sounds as great as ever. The song selection, from the well
known ("Moon River") to the obscure ("Calling You") is inspired. Without a
doubt, The Movie Album is a must for every music lover."
-Tim Van Alstine
"Barbra you have done it again. Thank you for giving us another superb
masterpiece as The Movie Album. What a beautiful collection of songs.
Barbra has blessed us with her talent and superb admiration of the arts.
Barbra, you are my "idol" -- your voice and songs always bring peace and harmony
to my life. God bless you."

"As always...another beautifully put together selection of songs by Ms.
Streisand! Thank goodness she follows her heart and keeps some of these
wonderful old songs alive for us to enjoy again and again. "Moon River" is
such a special song as is "Smile," and "Emily" has grown to be a new favorite of
mine. I've been listening to (and singing with) Barbra Streisand
for years-her voice only gets better with time!"
-Suzanne Coleman
"With The Movie Album, Ms. Streisand showed us again how perfect voice,
lyric and melody can come together to create a little piece of music
history.
From the bittersweet "Smile" that makes you wipe away some tears, to the
more than powerful "You're Gonna Hear From Me," Ms. Streisand fascinates the
listener with stunning arrangements and a voice clear as a bell.
Each song has its own kind of magic and its own little story that makes it
unique, but there's one thing they all have in common: A bit of the golden
talent of one of the greatest singers of all time."
-Stephanie Misterek, 15
Germany
"The Movie Album shows Barbra getting increasingly vivid with every
decade. This master stroke of a record has something for everyone and
everything for someone. In fact, as we look back over the centuries of
music where certain names epitomize musical talent, Beethoven, Bach,
Mozart...our great great great grandchildren will look back to Barbra's
albums, such as this, with the name "Streisand" enjoying the rightful
privilege of being tagged onto such a list. I have never felt what it is to
be in awe of a celebrity (despite living in England!), but listening to this
album I certainly feel in awe of talent."
-Paul Wheatley
"It has always stuck me that great art speaks to us all because it conveys
universal truths which we can all relate to. But occasionally a piece of art
stikes a chord so personal that it could have been painted, written or sung
just for you. This happened when i was listening to the opening track of
The Movie Album.
Thanks Barbra for letting your beautiful music underscore our lives."
-Robert Jackson
London
"What can I add to all these reviews? Barbra's voice on the The Movie
Album is simply perfect, it really can't get any better - and the choice of
songs is superb. Barbra singing "Calling You" from "Bagdad Café" is a
longstanding wish of mine come true! Goosebumps and tears! But I have one more
wish and that is that Barbra will fulfill the promise she made in the album's last song:
"You're Gonna Hear From Me"."
-Saskia Bal
Utrecht, The Netherlands
"The song "Wild is the Wind" is one of my favorites on the album and an
excellent choice for the DVD. It's a song Streisand really gets: she's
literally playing with the melody and she tumbles the notes up and down the
musical scale exactly where she wants them. Songs like this keep me a loyal
fan.
When I heard "Moon River" it moved me to tears and that's something that had
never happened to me before during the first hearing of any of her songs. I
love the nostalgic orchestration and especially her second reading of the
verse is full of overt emotion. Her haunting rendition of "Calling You" is
full of longing.
When I heard the words "this woman and the child in me" in "More In Love
With You" I just knew it had to be a Bergman lyric. I love the fact that
Barbra explains her personal taste and shares with us how important it has
been in her private life. The violin is absolutely gorgeous. It's a very
visible arrangement that really creates a sound picture.
All in all The Movie Album is a beautifully packaged, harmonious collection
with some great renditions that will stand the test of time."
-David Caelen, 29 years old

"The very first line in "Smile" brought me to tears - I broke down and cried
like a child. The music - so touching, so hauntingly beautiful, her words
wrap around every heavenly note like never before. It was indeed pure
magic! Each phrase captures your heart and sends you to a place where
you've never gone before. This is one amazing album - it's an amazing
experience to listen to every song. The journey is divine, the place is not
easy to describe - you will only understand when you listen to the music.
Love does exist, and is alive and warm in Barbra's latest release - The
Movie Album.
-Katy Brown

"You're one of the few singers out there who TRULY SINGS, knows what words
mean, and puts her heart and soul into everything. The Movie Album is just
another example of what can happen when an artist opens up and gives the
audience a rare glimpse of who that person is. Everything you do is "But Beautiful",
so I thank you..."
-George McClelland
Trenton, NJ
"What other artist could put together such a wonderful album? Nobody other
than Barbra Streisand. This album really says what Barbra is all about.
She sings from her heart, she sings her emotions, and she sings brilliantly.
I couldn't ask for a better album. It is truly a work of art."
-Jeffrey Cavalleri, 14
"The Movie Album reveals, once again, the enormous musical and acting talents
of Barbra Streisand. Only Barbra Streisand can take previously recorded
songs like "Moon River," "Smile," or "How Do You Keep the Music Playing?" Ñ songs
identified with famous singers Ñ and completely erase all previous
recordings of the songs from our minds. Ms. Streisand takes each song and
make its all her own. Her unique ability to blend vocal power and sweetness
and her consummate interpretation of the music and the lyrics turn each song
in a Barbra Streisand song. In The Movie Album, she improves on any
previous recording of the songs by leaps and bounds. When we now think of
songs like "Moon River" or "Smile" or "The Second Time Around," we'll think of
Barbra Streisand."
-Andy Furco
Martinez, CA
"The songs selected, the wonderful arrangements, your voice....
All perfectly combined ingredients to create, probably your best album ever.
Listening to this album is like a kiss to our soul, and as your number one
fan in ARGENTINA, I really thank you for that. Congratulations, for being able
to express yourself so clearly as the artist you are."
-Diego Lichtensztein
Buenos Aires, Argentina
"Barbra Streisand's approach to a song is unique. On The Movie Album she
once again proves she can sing old or new songs with such an intensity that
she makes them her own. No matter who of your favourite singers you have
heard singing a song done on this album - Barbra inevitably does it better
and makes it sound like the first time you have really heard it!
I dare you not to get goosebumps when you hear "Wild Is The Wind." And make
no mistake that "How Do You Keep The Music Playing" is Barbra at her vocal
best."
